Tri-County REC is a consumer-owned, non-profit electric utility. It was formed in 1936 by rural residents who wanted electricity but didn't want to pay the high prices the investor-owned companies demanded. Electric cooperatives were formed throughout the nation around that same time. Members banded together to secure service and fair prices. Cooperatives have worked ever since to continue that tradition.

The needs of rural residents change with time, so cooperatives must readjust. The 1990's have been a time of progress for Tri-County. In 1994, the cooperative formed a for-profit subsidiary, Wilderness Area Utilities. Wilderness' main purpose was to make easier the process of acquiring an investor-owned, for-profit electric company, Wellsboro Electric Company.

In 1999, Tri-County and our cooperative partner, Claverack REC formed C&T Enterprises to facilitate the purchase of another investor-owned company, Citizens' Electric Company.
